RIP Shadow

I just received the very sad news that the search is over for precious Shadow. She was hit by a car near an interstate. RIP Shadow, and may God give your family the Peace that passeth all understanding in this sad time.

Hug your babies today! You never know when it may be your last day with them.

This little guy has had it rough. First he was lost from his family, we took him in and found him a home, the guy was single and his job became more demanding. He said that it was not fair to “Charlie” to be left for 13 hours at a time. He is back with me, and I am trying to find him someone to love. He has a great personality, sweetest disposition, is house trained. He loves to play. Our vet said he is about 2 years old. We had him neutered and he has had his shots. I would keep him myself, but my male golden does not like other male dogs. Please pass this along to anyone you know who might want a great pet. We have a sweet doggie in Memphis in need of a  “GOOD” and forever home. Our angel rescuer, Lisa, saved this baby last week while I was in the hospital.

I took in the black lab pup living on the expressway behind the smoke booth. He is at my house now. He was dumped out of a car last week. He has been living in the median for a whole week waiting for his owner to come back to get him. He has been living off scraps that people have thrown out. The birds have been swooping down on him frightening him every day. There must be a nest in the nearby tree. I don’t know how he survived in the storms. I took his miserably tight collar off and he jumped up and wrapped his legs around me to “thank” me. He will be neutered and given shots on Friday

In the 2 hours he has been at my house, you have never seen a beaten down dog come so alive. Playful, fun, energetic, very very very loyal. Full of personality and thrilled to be off the expressway. Has a “goofy” face when he gets excited. Likes to stay right beside me. Likes other dogs.

He is approximately 1 to 2 years old, and would make a wonderful dog if you have the time to spend playing with him. He already teeteed outside. Needs a fenced yard and a dedicated new owner. Please contact Lisa at (901) 452-5822

Animal Control has given them until 6 PM before these precious dogs (over 200) will be seized and euthanized. CALL NOW PLEASE!

I just spoke with the nicest young man. You can e-mail him at contact@hopeforpaws.org with any help. They will be helping spay/neuter at least 40 of these babies, so any supplies or financial help would be appreciated I’m sure. This old Southern Belle in Memphis is sending a donation TODAY. He is going to e-mail me with updates and photos as well.

Fortunately, he is speaking with the Animal Control group there and hoping to be granted more time to save these babies from euthanization. Please send prayers as well.

Thoroughbreds Racing to Their Death?

New York (HLN) — It’s racing season in America! The Kentucky Derby is this weekend. Then it’s the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Get out the fancy party hats and pop the champagne!

But it’s not a cause for celebration for America’s horses. These magnificent, yet voiceless, creatures cannot tell you about the exploitation underlying America’s racing industry.

Where do thoroughbreds go after they lose one too many races, throw one too many riders or develop a limp? Many thousands of thoroughbreds end up being slaughtered for horse meat. The unpleasant truth is horse meat is eaten in Europe and Asia.

Despite the myth that they end up knee-deep in grass on some idyllic farm, the reality is that horses are very expensive to keep. When they outlive their usefulness, they often are sent on a hellish journey that ends in a slaughterhouse. Toward the end of the line, these horses are sold priced per pound.

I know. I’ve bought perfectly healthy horses for a couple of hundred dollars just as they were about to be loaded on a slaughterhouse-bound truck.

The fortunate few end up at a sanctuary. The others are bought at auction, end up in overloaded trailers and travel thousands of miles without food or water to the slaughter plant. Some are dead on arrival.

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), tens of thousands of live horses are transported every year across the border to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.

Part of the problem is that the horse racing industry breeds for perfection. For every stallion or mare that looks like a winner, an untold number of foals get left in the dust. As the saying goes, they can’t all be winners … and they can’t all be riding or school horses either.

There is a severe horse overpopulation crisis caused by overbreeding in the racing industry. It’s time for that industry to accept responsibility for its castoffs and take dramatic action to protect a species that has so loyally served humankind.

They’ve got the money to create enough retirement homes to accommodate all the horses that pass through their gates.

Horse lovers won a huge victory when America’s foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses were shut down several years ago. Before that, the HSUS estimates 100,000 horses were being slaughtered every year in America. Ever since, horse slaughter proponents have aggressively campaigned to reopen such plants, despite public revulsion.

For too long, Congress has been mulling over a Horse Slaughter Prohibition bill (H.R. 503) that would “prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.” This bill passed in the House of Representatives in 2006, but languished in the Senate.

It’s time for compassionate Americans to send a wake-up call to their members of Congress and demand passage of legislation to end the wholesale slaughter of America’s horses once and for all.

Then, the racing industry will be forced to do something about its addiction to breeding. The time to be oh-so-polite about the industry’s dirty little secret is over. This secret is out of the gate. Now, the race to end the cruelty must begin in earnest.

Can you see it? Can you see that cute little tail and target butt between the legs of this lady? I would guess this is a little Jack Russell being adopted maybe. Looks a lot like my Tinkerbell the JRT/chihuahua mix.

I must apologize for being so long posting this update. Lizzy found a wonderful home that same weekend. She is very happy, and this was another wonderful ending thanks to the St. Jude Electronic Bulletin Board and loving folks like Cindy.

I asked to post this info about sweet Lizzy, and my friend Cindy tells me someone is coming today and may adopt her. I will include an update if they do. In the meantime, I just had to share the beautiful photos of this wonderful baby.

She is so pretty and a great size!! Lizzy is about 14 months, weighs about 35 pounds. She is spayed and housebroken. She knows her basic commands. She is very shy and timid so she is skitish. She is very sweet. Ideal home would be single female. She is okay with other dogs in the household. She is crate trained too. Crate comes with her. I appreciate any help in finding her a new home.
